According to reliable sources, a remake of 1983’s cult classic slasher film Sleepaway Camp is in development.
Original writer-director Robert Hiltzik is expected to return, and is said to be currently working on the script.
Saturday Night Live alum Kenan Thompson is aboard to produce, alongside business partner Johnny Ryan Jr, under their AFA Productions banner.
It is understood that AFA were successful in obtaining remake rights to Sleepaway Camp from Hiltzik, under the condition he return. Hiltzik has previously held-out on relinquishing the franchise rights when approached with the idea of a remake or reboot by others.
Details are currently being kept a closely guarded secret, but we hope to know more soon.
Of the project, Hiltzik said the following in a statement:
“I am both thrilled and humbled to be working with AFA on the reimagined Sleepaway Camp. Though I have been approached by several companies regarding the remake of Sleepaway Camp, only AFA has shared my vision and is excited to have me helm the film, therefore preserving the integrity of the original film for the fans, as well as introducing Sleepaway Camp to a whole new generation. Be prepared for a new member of the Sleepaway Camp family.”
Thompson shared his thoughts, saying:
“I’m excited to work with the original genius Robert and bring back to life a camp classic!!!”
Rumours of a Sleepaway Camp remake or reboot have periodically popped up since the late 2000s. Last we heard, original star Felissa Rose was to return as Angela Baker for a new film, which now seems to have been forgotten.
We’ll let you know any further updates on this surprising remake news as soon as we can.
