Screws scattered on driveways spark concern in Abington Township, Pa.: ‘I’m like fed up’

ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WPVI) — Residents in the Ardsley-North Hills section of Abington Township say someone has been deliberately scattering screws in their driveways, and some homes have been targeted more than once since at least last Thursday night.

Kevin Shearn said he discovered a handful of loose screws in his driveway overnight Thursday into Friday.

“I’m very upset. I think it’s horrible, it should not happen,” Shearn said. “It’s just getting out of hand and we don’t need this, so whoever is doing it, please stop.”

Other neighbors reported similar findings.

“I ended up finding 25 all total,” said Charles Monaghan.

Eileen Duffy said she found about seven to eight screws.

Police say they are investigating multiple reports. Neighbors believe the incidents are targeting homes with political signs on the front lawn, specifically those supporting Maria DellaMonica in the Ward 6 commission race.

Some residents are standing firm, while others are reconsidering the signage.

“I’m not taking my sign down,” Shearn said.

“I’m like fed up and I don’t want anything happening to my car, so I’ll probably take the sign down because I don’t want it happening again,” Duffy said.

Monaghan expressed concern about the potential danger.

“If we had a flat tire, I would be really upset,” he said. “I travel the Turnpike a lot, and if there’s a flat tire, a blowout, something could happen dangerously, could hurt somebody.”

Neighbors said police were back in the area Monday. No suspects have been identified.

DellaMonica’s challenger, Commissioner Jeffrey Browne, has publicly condemned the incidents.

“It is my hope that whoever is responsible for these acts is found and found quickly and brought to justice,” Browne said in a video posted to Facebook.
Monaghan said the situation is unprecedented in the neighborhood.

“Nothing like this before has happened,” he said. “I’ve been here since 1982.”

Attempts to contact Maria DellaMonica for comment on Monday were unsuccessful.

Police are asking anyone who believes they may have been a victim or has helpful information to come forward.
