Rogelio Vega case: Vineland, NJ man arrested for allegedly luring children near school

VINELAND, N.J. (WPVI) — Police in Vineland have arrested a man accused of luring children, including a girl who was on her way to school earlier this week.

Rogelio Vega, 33, of Vineland, is facing multiple charges, including luring and enticing a juvenile, lewdness, criminal sexual contact, and weapons offenses.

Authorities say they responded to several luring reports on the morning of Sept. 29. Vega is allegedly responsible for three incidents involving four victims, including two juveniles and two adults. Investigators believe there may be additional victims.

Action News spoke with one of the victims, a 13-year-old girl, who said she was approached by a man asking for directions. She said he then exposed himself and tried to lure her into his vehicle.

“There was this guy, he asked for directions to somewhere and I told him I didn’t know where that place was, so I kept walking, but he stopped me and like exposed himself to me,” the girl said.

She managed to reach school safely, where she alerted staff and police and met with a school counselor.

The girl’s mother, Doris Biddle, praised her daughter for speaking up.

“I’m so proud of her, kids think that telling is so simple. It’s not, because when she told, then other people told, and now maybe more people are safe,” she said.

Police say the incidents occurred within a few blocks of each other and close to Veterans Memorial Middle School.

According to a criminal complaint, officers found several guns in Vega’s vehicle, including one loaded with 10 rounds – two of which were hollow points.

The Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed Vega remains in custody.

Biddle said the school district is now discussing new safety and transportation measures for students.

“I think the bigger message here is, if it feels wrong, it probably is, and even if you think you shouldn’t say something, you definitely should. Don’t be embarrassed, don’t worry about people talking about you. Don’t worry about who’s judging you or if they think you’re not telling the truth, say something.”

Vega is scheduled to appear in court on Monday morning.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Vineland police at (856) 691-4111.
