Pumpkin spice lattes have always been, and always will be, one of my favorite coffee drinks, especially in the fall. It’s a fantastic mix of coffee, milk, and the mouth-watering flavor of pumpkin pie. Yum!
Move over, Starbucks. The best homemade version of my dearest coffee is here! Latte is an incredible combination of espresso and milk. It’s much creamier than a cappuccino, and you can drink it hot, cold, or iced, making it perfect for any time of year.
What Makes Spiced Lattes so Good
Spiced coffee has been around for thousands of years. Turkish coffee traditionally has cardamom, and around Christmas time, holiday-spiced coffee is always on grocery store shelves. Make that spice a good pumpkin pie spice mixture, and you have a latte worth bragging about.
How to Make a Pumpkin Spice Latte at Home
- Heat the pumpkin purée, pumpkin pie spice, and a pinch of black pepper in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook for 1-2 minutes, constantly stirring, until hot and fragrant. (Photo 1)
- Add the sugar to taste and stir until the mixture combines into a syrup consistency. (Photos 2-3)
- Whisk in the milk and vanilla and cook until warmed, stirring often. (Photo 4)
- Froth the mixture in a blender.
- Divide the coffee between 2 mugs. Add the frothed pumpkin mixture, then top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice. (Photos 5-6)
Tips and Notes
- Feel free to omit the sugar if you prefer unsweetened coffee.
- Low-fat and plant-based milks, like oat and almond milk, work fine. Coconut milk also works, but it may add a coconut flavor to your latte.
- Feel free to use decaf coffee. Plus, it’s really good with black or green tea or unsweetened cocoa powder.
- If you’re into healthy food, adding a little ground turmeric will kick it up a notch on the nutritional scale. Have you ever heard of golden milk? How about a golden latte? I like the sound of that.
- Not all beautiful autumn days are chilly; some of them are downright hot. What better way to enjoy the flavors of fall than with a cold or frozen latte? Let the coffee cool and pour it all over ice.

Pecan pie brownies are so good with coffee. Now, if you’re a pumpkin fanatic, pumpkin chocolate chip cookies are a must. And don’t forget to top your latte with homemade whipped cream.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and transfer the mixture to a blender, mixing until combined and frothy. (If you have a frother, go for it.)

- You can triple or quadruple the pumpkin purée, spice, and black pepper mix and freeze 1½ tablespoons in each well of an ice cube tray. Then, when you crave the steamy goodness of a pumpkin spice latte, heat one cube of spice mix per cup of milk in a saucepan, and proceed with the recipe.
- Feel free to replace the milk with a plant-based milk if that’s the way you roll. My preference is almond.
- Omit the sugar if desired. Some people don’t like sweet coffee, and that is fine.
