Philadelphia leaders are asking for help from city residents in developing new safety plan

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia officials are asking city residents for their help to improve public safety in the city.

Mayor Cherelle Parker, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel and other city leaders spoke at City Hall Thursday morning about coming up with a new strategy to fight crime.

“That means restoring order, holding those who commit crimes accountable, and ensuring that our police are visibly deployed through data-driven strategies,” says Mayor Parker.

They are describing it as a 5-year public safety strategic plan. They say that currently they only have a framework in place and are asking city residents for their input.

Leaders are asking for the public to take part in a survey to describe what they want public safety to look like. They will then look at that input as well as input they have collected from community town halls.

“A plan is being developed, inclusive in its collaboration involving residents, neighbors, business leaders,” says Commissioner Bethel.

Officials say they have already discussed some elements they would like to include, such as evidence based investigations and data driven work.

“We’ve been at this work since May,” said David Zega, Executive Director of Strategic Planning. “And we will continue. Framework is almost done, the strategies will come over the next few months. We hope to have a draft we can put up for public comment right in the beginning of 2026.”

The city says there is a wide civic engagement of about 200 people so far.
