Netflix Grabs Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Steel Ball Run

The Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Steel Ball Run anime will stream exclusively on Netflix, the streamer has announced.

The anime is “coming soon.”

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Steel Ball Run was announced in April and is an adaptation of the seventh part of Hirohiko Araki’s Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure manga. More details are coming on November 23 JST.

Steel Ball Run is set in America towards the end of the 19th century and is also the name of the race that features in the story. Viz Media describes the first volume of the Shueisha-published manga as such:

Riders from around the world gather in the Wild West for the race of the century! Johnny Joestar, a former jockey paralyzed from the waist down, comes to spectate, and momentarily regains the ability to walk while watching a duel fought by Gyro Zeppeli. Desperate to learn more about this power, Johnny joins the race alongside Gyro and embarks on the most epic and bizarre race to ever cross the American frontier!

Steel Ball Run ran from 2004 to 2011 and was initially serialized in Shonen Jump before moving to the monthly, seinen magazine Ultra Jump. This Manga is Amazing! noted that the move allowed for longer-spanning stories (due to the increased page count) and the ability to have depictions that would’ve been difficult to include in a shonen magazine. Subsequent Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure installments are also Ultra Jump titles.

The overall Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure series began in 1986, with its ninth part The JOJOLands debuting in February 2023. The manga initially inspired an OVA series and a movie that were produced by the now-inactive Another Push Pin Planning, with a new line of David Production-produced anime, including an OVA adaptation of the Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan spin-off, beginning in 2012. The Steel Ball Run anime was preceded by 2022’sJojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean.
