Need help with your electric bill? NJBPU offers credits and support programs

Overview:

Electric bills in New Jersey can spike during summer, but the NJ Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) offers a range of programs to reduce household energy costs. These include direct credits, utility bill assistance for low- and moderate-income families, and energy-saving initiatives like community solar.

If you are looking for ways to lower your monthly energy costs, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) is here to help. Whether you rent or own your home, NJBPU offers a range of programs to reduce your usage and make your energy bills more manageable.

More than $430 million in direct bill relief is currently being distributed to New Jersey households. These funds are helping residents lower their energy costs and keep more money in their pockets.

What Assistance Is Available?

NJBPU supports several programs that offer direct assistance to New Jersey residents:

Universal Service Fund (USF):

Helps lower monthly electric and gas bills for income-eligible households.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP): Provides help with heating bills and may cover emergency heating repairs or replacements.

Payment Assistance for Gas and Electric (PAGE): Offers temporary help for moderate-income families with overdue utility bills.

Lifeline Utility Assistance: Provides an annual energy benefit to seniors and people with disabilities.

Winter Termination Program: Protects eligible households from shutoffs during the winter season, from November 15 through March 15.

These programs are available to a wide range of residents. That includes individuals, families, seniors, and people on fixed incomes.

Community Solar can also help utility customers save 15% or more on their electricity bills – regardless if you rent, own, or your income-level.

Direct Relief Automatically Applied

In addition to the programs listed above, NJBPU is also providing automatic bill credits this year:

A $100 credit is being applied to every investor-owned electric utility residential customer via two $50 credits in September and October.

Households that meet income requirements are receiving an additional $175 in savings.

No application is needed. These credits appear automatically on qualifying customers’ bills through their investor-owned utility provider.
