TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) — Trenton police are looking for the driver who struck a man on his scooter and dragged him underneath the car before leaving the scene on Sunday morning.
Family members said the victim is 32-year-old Nathaniel Turner, and he remains in critical condition.
“It’s a shame. It’s pitiful. I’m hurt,” said his mother, Marilyn Turner.
Marilyn and her family have been at her son’s bedside in the hospital since Sunday, where he is intubated with a head injury and broken ribs and leg.
They said he was supposed to start his new job on Monday and recently bought the scooter to go to work.
“Thank God Nate woke up today. He opened his eyes. So, that made me feel a little bit better,” said his aunt, Brenda Henry. “He had a lot going for himself.”
Police said Nathaniel was riding his scooter near Oakland Street and Norman Avenue around 4:15 a.m. when the incident happened.
“Whoever hit him should have had a heart and stop,” said Henry. “At least stop the car and find out what went on and what happened to him. You know you hit that person.”
“People are so cruel,” said Dominique Scott, who lives near the crime scene.
Scott said she’s still recovering from when a vehicle struck her and sped away in the same area two years ago.
“This street is really, really bad with the speeding,” said Scott. “They have no respect for people’s property or even lives out here,” said Scott.
Scott urges local leaders to install speed bumps and increase police patrols to protect pedestrians.
She also hopes detectives find the suspect who left Nathaniel on the road.
“I truly hope and pray you make it through and get the justice you deserve because it’s not right,” said Scott.
“Whoever did this to my son needs to turn themself in,” said Marilyn.
Police are looking for a small, dark-colored vehicle.
