MILGRAM Releases “Pain” Anime Music Video

The MILGRAM project has released the “Pain” anime music video, which is part of its third season and concerns the third trial of the character Mu Kusunoki.

The new video reveals more of Mu’s past with her murder victim Rei, showing how their bully-victim relationship is flipped.

The video is directed by DMYM, who is the project’s overall art director and who previously directed Mu’s “After Pain” music video. The staff credits also include:

• Character designer: Tama Kikura (DECO*27 feat. Hatsune Miku’s “Blue Planet” music video)
• Concept artist and color scripter: No.734
• Color setter and paint checker: Makiko Kojima (The Marginal Service color designer)
• Compositing director: flapper3 Inc.’s Takuya Ogawa
• Animation coordinator: Takeshi Hirata
• Production cooperation: C-Station

“Pain” is now available physically and digitally. The release includes the voice drama Killer B, featuring Mu (Arisa Kori) and Es (Yurina Amami).

MILGRAM is a music project co-produced by game creator and scriptwriter Takuya Yamanaka (also credited with the project’s story and as its author) and vocaloid producer DECO*27 (also credited with “sound”). MILGRAM is also the name of the story’s main prison setting, with the community being cast as an amnesiac guard (the aforementioned Es). The general idea is for the audience to vote on the innocence or guilt of its prisoners (with Mu being one of them), with the results affecting the characters’ fates in the next season and the contents of the songs. Beyond analyzing the music videos and songs, participants can interrogate the prisoners via an official app.

Illustrator akka came up with the character design drafts, while the DECO*27-founded creative studio OTOIRO (which akka is a part of) is credited with sound and visual creation.

The project began in 2020 and will have three rounds of trials. Beyond music releases, MILGRAM has also inspired merchandise and media like manga and novels.
