JAMES WAN WILL BE “HUGELY INVOLVED” IN NEXT “SAW” CHAPTER

We’ve known for quite some time now that Blumhouse Productions own the lion’s share of the Saw franchise rights.

The company purchased Twisted Pictures share of the property this past spring, following their failure to get Saw XI into production. Lionsgate, desperate for a hit, bought out their partners, and took Saw to Blumhouse with lightning speed.

Marketed as a “homecoming” for the Saw series, the acquisition by Blumhouse brings the property back to the arms of its creators. Filmmakers James Wan and Leigh Whannell are known for their close work with Blumhouse. Wan’s Atomic Monster banner has even brokered a merger deal with the company, tying them together for the next decade.

However, although the ties to Wan and Whannell gave fans hope that they’d step back into the Saw franchise, nothing was confirmed… Until now…

In a tell-all interview recently, Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum finally shed some light on what’s next for Saw under the Blumhouse banner. Of the existing movies and the Saw legacy, Blum said:
“It’s really hard to make 10 movies in a franchise — I don’t take that away from the original series’ producers. And I’m grateful to them for allowing us to continue.”

Excitingly, Blum also confirmed Wan will be involved stating:
“My creative outlook is what I always preach: Get the people who made the magic in the first place more involved. James Wan [the original director] will be hugely involved. That’s how we’re going to reinvent it.”

So, there we have it! Wan will return to the franchise that put him on the map, in a hands-on capacity.

This will mark Wan’s first direct involvement with the franchise since 2006’s Saw III, which he intended to end the series. Since then, Wan has returned in an Executive Producer capacity, which he has described as an “honorary title.”

Although we know precious little about Blumhouse’s Saw plans, heavy rumours suggest it will be a hard reboot, veering away from the franchise’s storied continuity.

Will Wan return to direct this all-new take on the Saw mythos? We’ll let you know as soon as we have any further updates.
