Hello Kitty is set to make her Hollywood debut in a few years.
Sanrio announced that a New Line Cinema and Warner Brothers Pictures Animation-produced.film based on the character, which is currently in the development stage, will receive a global release beginning on July 21, 2028.
The press release states that the film will be based on the values of compassion and bonds that have already been emphasized by Sanrio’s characters, and that it will be something for people of all generations and ages around the world.
Variety reported that Leo Matsuda is directing the Hello Kitty film. A script hasn’t been finalized yet, according to the outlet, with the latest draft coming from Wicked‘s Dana Fox.
New Line Cinema announced the existence of a Hello Kitty film back in 2019.
Hello Kitty was introduced in 1973 and is now a globally recognized face. The character, described as being born “in the suburbs of London,” celebrated her 50th anniversary last year, during which there were collaborations with gaming peripheral brand Razer and Van Leeuwen Ice Cream.
Earlier this year, Sanrio became the fourth-largest stakeholder of IG Port, which owns animation production studios Production I.G and WIT STUDIO. The Sanrio characters My Melody and Kurumi recently starred in a stop-motion anime produced by TORUKU from WIT STUDIO that debuted on Netflix in July.
