Y’all watch Friendship yet? Andrew DeYoung’s showcase for I Think You Should Leave star Tim Robinson is a cringe comedy first, a horror movie second. I mean that earnestly. Whether it’s a midnight rendezvous in underground tunnels or Single White Female gazes across the room, the A24 comedy is the best genre hybrid I’ve seen in years, and no one but Tim Robinson could sell me on the horror pathos quite so well. He’s always an outsider, teetering on the fringes of society, and that allows even the most incredulous of developments to land.
Robinson, as early as his SNL days, has always had an affinity for horror. Even I Think You Should Leave dips into the horror well. A ghost tour gone wrong is absolutely hilarious, and a doggy door ad is the funniest and scariest thing I’ve seen on Netflix in years. So much so, you can actually check out that clip above. But we’re all here for Robinson’s latest and greatest, and that’s the critically acclaimed premiere of The Chair Company. What’s the show all about? It’s hard to say, but you can get a pretty good sense of it below:
Per HBO Max: After an embarrassing incident at work, William Ronald Trosper finds himself investigating a far-reaching conspiracy.
Listen, I love this show. I’ve only seen a few episodes, but it’s no doubt going to be my favorite show of the year. Sure, I’m biased and have been a longstanding fan of Robinson’s bit, but the way he and co-creator Zach Kanin craft an earnestly intriguing conspiracy around a malfunctioning office chair is nothing short of ingenious. It’s got the propulsive conspiracy of All the President’s Men alongside the mundane, dry humor of something like Curb Your Enthusiasm. A match made in heaven? I think so.
Critical reviews have been really strong, too. On Rotten Tomatoes, the consensus for the show’s first season reads, “Tim Robinson’s volcanic comedic ethos finds an ideal outlet in The Chair Company, a descent into paranoia that finds huge laughs in deeply uncomfortable places.” It’s hard to describe for anyone unfamiliar with Robinson’s bit, but it works really well, and horror fans especially won’t want to miss out. Check out some choice social media reactions below:
Watched first three eps of Tim Robinson’s THE CHAIR COMPANY waiting for red eye to board, and it disturbed/bemused me so much I spent entire flight wide awake. If frequently checking safety of my own seat. Any way, too nervous to watch rest, but looking forward to it eventually.

The Chair Company gets a resounding HELL YEAH from me. If you find Tim Robinson’s anxious yelling extremely funny, as I do, you’ll like it. But it also has excellent music (score & needle drops), sharp writing about the mundane ways we use the Internet, and sublime paranoia. pic.twitter.com/UP0yRoe9J0

THE CHAIR COMPANY is cringey and creepy and hilarious. I wasn’t familiar with Tim Robinson until this year but now that I’ve watched FRIENDSHIP and I THINK YOU SHOULD LEAVE and now this, I’m officially a superfan.

The Chair Company. We’re really getting into the dark niches when we’re getting to seeing sad youtube comments and making replies to them.
