The Lenticulars, the previously teased TRIGGER-produced anime from Gridman Universe director Akira Amemiya, has had its first episode released on YouTube.
The show is a short-form youth anime centered on high school students, with the debut episode (numbered as #1 a/) having the title “Work Gloves Are Gloves.” It uses very limited animation that’s partially masked by the characters having a paper-cutout look.
Amemiya handled the series composition, script, character designs, storyboards, episode direction, animation, and coloring, and had a hand in the backgrounds as well. 24chocolate’s Rikiya Okada composed the music.
The Lenticulars‘ title and existence were revealed in a teaser video from October 25 JST. Following Amemiya as he walks in the night and muses about his past and his post-Gridman Universe activities, the video includes the director saying, “When I make anime, I always think about how to express something primitively like an initial impulse, a raw roar. I hope I am able to convey the feelings I had when I was making anime back in my student days.”
Originally a member of GAINAX, Amemiya was assistant director on TRIGGER’s debut TV anime, Kill la Kill. Before the Gridman anime trilogy, he directed Inferno Cop (also a limited animation web series with a motion comic feel), Ninja Slayer From Animation, and the Denki Chojin Gridman boys invent great hero short for Animator Expo. His contributions to non-TRIGGER-produced projects include drawing the storyboards for the 2021 Sorairo Utility short and the TV series version’s 12th episode.
