We are sad to report that over the weekend the Grande Saline region experienced heavy rain and significant flooding. The river overflowed its banks and spread throughout the area. Homes were damaged and many families lost everything. Community members are exposed to the contaminated standing water and at significant risk. The threat to health is ongoing as the lack of adequate sanitation in the area increases the risk for the spread of disease.
Unfortunately, our school was not spared. The classrooms have significant water infiltration. Teaching materials, including books and papers, and school furniture were damaged or destroyed. The school itself is potentially dangerous due to standing water and mud. As soon as it is safe to access the school, the community plans organize clean up sessions with volunteers (provided it is safe to do so).
The Grande Saline community is hoping for support to assist with cleaning and equipment replacement. Health for Haiti has asked that once it is safe to enter the area, the school staff provide a list of supplies that are needed to prepare for the upcoming school term, scheduled to begin on October 1. We hope to help with sanitizing supplies as well as the necessary school materials.
Pastor Berlando, the school principal, states, “Despite the magnitude of the challenge, we remain united and confident. The strength of our school community has always been in its faith and solidarity. Together, with God’s help, we will overcome this ordeal and rebuild what has been damaged. We believe in the power of prayer and ask our community to support us spiritually during this difficult time.”
Health for Haiti hopes to provide some financial support and asks that all who are willing please keep the families in Grande Saline in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this challenge.
