“Only monsters play god…”
Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein adaption is set to hit select theatres very soon, and just in time for Spooky Season, Netflix have gifted us a unique final trailer.
Whereas previous adaptions of Mary Shelley’s classic novel have largely featured “the monster” as a rather one-dimensional character, del Toro is doing things differently.
The final trailer is told entirely from the perspective of Victor Frankenstein’s grotesque creation, painting the character in a much more sympathetic light.
The creature, played by Jacob Elordi, recounts his death in the Crimean War, until he was “born again.” However, something is different this time… He has memories not his own, retaining bits and pieces of the lives of the other bodies making up his grotesque form.
Seemingly abandoned by his creator, the creature sets out on a perilous journey to seek revenge, after learning the man’s name… Victor Frankenstein.
With Victor living a comfortable and affluent life, it seems things are about to go horribly wrong for the aspiring scientist… but will he and his loved ones survive the onslaught?
After receiving universal acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival, Netflix opted to release del Toro’s passion project to select theatres. Hype is at a fever-pitch for the film, with many deeming it the best adaption of Shelley’s classic book to date, based on the trailers alone.
Alongside Elordi, Frankenstein stars Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Charles Dance, and Lars Mikkelsen.
The film will debut in select theatres on October 17th, before debuting on Netflix November 7th.
