First published in 1923, pulp magazine Weird Tales helped define the horror and fantasy genres while giving rise to icons such as H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, Ray Bradbury, and C.L. Moore.
A century later, Monstrous Books is teaming up with Weird Tales editor Jonathan Maberry for the first-ever Weird Tales graphic novel — an ambitious adaptation and expansion of the influential magazine.
We have an exclusive first look at the main cover by Kelley Jones (The Sandman, Batman) below. Eric Powell (The Goon) will also provide a Lovecraftian variant cover.
The 8.5×11 prestige hardcover graphic novel adapts several seminal stories:
- Michael Avallone’s “The Man Who Walked on Air” by artist Robert Hack (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and writer David Avallone, son of Michael Avallone
- Ray Bradbury’s “The Scythe” by artist J.K. Woodward (Fallen Angel) and acclaimed horror author Jonathan Maberry (Rot & Ruin)
- Allison V. Harding’s “The Damp Man” by artist Marco Finnegan (Calavera) and writer Nancy A. Collins, who was the first woman to write Swamp Thing and Vampirella
- Robert E. Howard’s “Skulls in the Stars” by 30 Days of Night co-creator Steve Niles
- C.L. Moore’s “Shambleau” by artist George Quadros (Sumerian) and writer Blake Northcott (Catwoman)
It also features original stories, including:
- A Lovecraft mythos story by Peabody Award-winning writer Rodney Barnes (“The Boondocks,” Killadelphia)
- “Doctor Satan vs. Jules de Grandin” by Monstrous Books’ James Aquilone, writer of the Bram Stoker Award-winning Kolchak: The Night Stalker – 50th Anniversary
- “Miskatonic University” by Weird Tales president John Harlacher
“For the first time, the weird, the dark, and the wondrous stories that launched the careers of genre legends leap from the pages of the magazine into a stunning graphic novel experience,” said Aquilone.
“Editor Jonathan Maberry and president John Harlacher have been doing exciting things since they resurrected Weird Tales in 2019,” Aquilone continues. “When it came time to assemble the contributors for the historic first graphic novel, we went big and bold. These stories are worthy of the great, pulp legacy of Weird Tales.”
