The anime, which is set for a January 2026 premiere, is an adaptation of the manga from Tachibana Higuchi. The story concerns the feared witch Luna (Haruka Shiraishi), who is known as the Mushroom Witch (Champignon no Majo) due to the poisonous mushrooms that sprout in her wake.

The Hakusensha-published manga began serialization in Manga Park in 2019 and has six tankobon volumes as of December 2024.

In August, one of the Champignon no Majo anime’s main animation production studios, Qzil.la, found itself being accused of using AI in the recently revealed Sekiro: No Defeat anime due to its background. The studio’s website mentions the development of technology like AI in cooperation with various partners, and a (now-unavailable) post on the Niigata International Animation Film Festival’s website, regarding an AI-themed presentation from Qzil.la and Comics Mart, stated that AI was being used to produce 60% of the animation from the upcoming The Ideal Sponger Life TV anime.

In the case of Sekiro, Qzil.la issued a statement asserting that no generative AI was used in its production, and a prior press release said that the anime was “fully hand-drawn.”
