CAMDEN, N.J. (WPVI) — A Camden County police officer was rushed to the hospital after being shot during a pedestrian stop on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred just before 11 p.m. near North Chesapeake and Congress roads in the Fairview section of Camden, New Jersey.
According to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, officers were attempting to stop 25-year-old Marques Jones, of Camden, when he allegedly pointed a handgun toward the officer. Soon after, investigators say Jones fired multiple shots, and one of the bullets hit the officer’s arm.
A police sergeant who was with the officer returned fire, striking the suspect in the body.
Both were taken to Cooper University Hospital. The officer has apparent non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition. The suspect is said to be in critical condition.
According to police, there’s bruising on the officer’s chest, and the bullet might’ve ricocheted off his bulletproof vest and into his arm.
“There is some bruising on his chest, so it does appear that a round did strike the vest. I don’t know if that’s the same round that entered his arm. That’s all part of the investigation,” said Camden County Police Chief Gabe Rodriguez.
A handgun was recovered in the area where Jones was standing when the officer was shot.
Jones has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, and other related offenses.
The injured officer has been on the force for two years, according to Chief Rodriguez.
Since this was an officer-involved shooting, the Attorney General’s Office is investigating, too.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Detective Timothy Jordan of the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit at 856-365-3073 and Detective Shane Gilson the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Special Prosecutions Unit at 856-225-8563.
