From the beginning pages Goulding paints a vivid sensory landscape. Not only depicting description with mere sight and sound, the manipulation of scent and emotional hues breathes brand new life into the story telling process. Suffice to state, one does not merely read The Shimmers but attains the Shimmers experience.
The author does a fantastic execution of character building. Emotion in a kaleidoscope array is highlighted. Once we develop a sense of empathy for our lead protagonists, as an audience we’re rendered putty in Goulding’s hands.
In a sea of over saturated, done-to-death genre tales, The Shimmers presents very unique prowess and prose. While depicting the story from point of view of each parallel dimension the font appears on the pages to distinguish between each. The author has even gone on record as to state there lies a hidden message within, should the audience follow each of the bolded text throughout the novel.
While conflict of man versus the unknown perpetually escalates, Goulding unleashes a climax reminiscent of Hitchcock or Shyamalan influences. By far my favourite read of 2025 and may very well be within my top five most cherished reading experiences of all time. I will undoubtedly jump at the chance to encounter any future works by JF Goulding.
