Today, there is a bright light shining for Gremlins enthusiasts, as we’ve just learned some exciting news regarding Gremlins 3. The filmmaking duo behind the highly successful Final Destination: Bloodlines (Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein) has signed on to join original creator Chris Columbus in writing the script! Not only that, but Steven Spielberg will return to executive produce!
We already have a release date, as well. Warner Bros. has scheduled Gremlins 3 to wreak havoc in theaters on November 19th, 2027.
In addition to co-writing the script, Chris Columbus is also on board to direct the project.
Said Columbus to THR, “I’m filled with a tremendous surge of inspiration and passion as I embark on this cinematic journey. It’s an honor to reunite with Steven Spielberg and Warner Bros., as we bring this latest chapter of Gremlins to a brand new generation of moviegoers who will experience all of the thrills of this grand adventure on the big screen.”
Originally intended to be a hard-R horror film, Spielberg, Columbus, and director Joe Dante worked to transform Gremlins into an entertaining gateway horror film suitable for (mostly) the whole family. It follows a young man (Zach Galligan) who adopts a mystical creature, a Mogwai, that he names Gizmo. With the gift comes three specific rules… don’t get them wet… don’t feed them after midnight… and never expose them to sunlight. Of course, those rules are soon broken, and a small town experiences monstrous pandemonium on Christmas Eve.
Despite the fun antics of heroic little fuzzball Gizmo and his mischievous counterparts, the film was deemed so frightening that we have it to thank for the introduction of the PG-13 rating.
A third installment has been in the works for a long time, though we recently saw two seasons of an animated prequel series released on HBO Max. With this news, it seems Gremlins 3 is finally full steam ahead.
Plot details have yet to be revealed. It’s also unknown if stars Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates will return. Stay tuned to Dread Central for more information as it comes our way.
