Hocus Pocus is a beloved IP with a fanatical fanbase. Though the first film took a while to find its audience, the second was an immediate success, breaking streaming records when it debuted on Disney+ in 2022. Naturally, a third film is already in development. Original cast members Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy have all expressed interest in returning for the third series installment. In fact, Midler recently revealed that she has seen a script for the threequel, and she seems pretty taken with the direction.
Midler recently appeared on Watch What Happens Live and shared her take with host Andy Cohen, saying, “Well, you know, they sent a script, and a lot of it was brilliant. So I got very excited, and now we’re sort of trying to figure out what it is and where it’s going to be and how much it’s going to cost and all those logistical things.”

It sounds like the project is in the very early stages of development. So, it will probably be a while before principal photography commences. However, I suspect that things will move much quicker this time around. The gap between the first and second films spans a whopping 29 years. Yet, with the resounding success of the second installment, I can only imagine that the suits at Disney will be eager to hit the ground running with the third incarnation.
Hocus Pocus 2 director Anne Fletcher is reportedly on board to helm the third outing, while Hocus Pocus 2 scribe Jen D’Angelo is also expected to return.
The setup for Hocus Pocus goes like this:
After moving to Salem, Mass., teenager Max Dennison (Omri Katz) explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani (Thora Birch) and their new friend, Allison (Vinessa Shaw). After dismissing a story Allison tells as superstitious, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches (Midler, Parker, and Najimy) who used to live in the house. Now, with the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches’ book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal.
