ASMR TikToks celebrate Philadelphia’s everyday sounds

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Without a doubt, Philadelphia has its own soundtrack. The sound of a coffee pouring into a Wawa cup. The scraping of a spoon into a cup of water ice. One Northeast Philadelphia native is tapping into that soundtrack with her now-viral TikTok posts.

The posts feature a series of Philly-inspired ASMR videos. ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response.

People watch others crinkling paper or frying an egg, or pouring water with the sound up to relax and soothe the soul.

In this case, all the subject matter has a Philadelphia origin story.

Kenney exaggerates her Philly accent while biting into a soft pretzel or pouring that cup of Wawa coffee with full sound up.

The mother of two started her posts a few months ago for fun, and they’re going viral, even catching the attention of Kylie Kelce, who gave Kenney’s accentuated accent “a good 11.”

Action News anchor Sarah Bloomquist asked her, “How do you decide what you’re going to do?”

“Well, first, it was people in the comment section, like, ‘Can you do Wawa next?’ ‘Can you do ACME next?’ So that’s how I was doing them at first,” Kenney said. “But first, I just had a tomato pie at home, and I’m like, ‘Oh, I’ll just make a video out of this.’ And it just was like what I had at home, and then from there, people were just like requesting stuff.”

As to whether she’s going to continue making the videos, “Yeah, I’m gonna keep doing it. I guess until I don’t, or I’ll do some version of it. Like, I just keep doing whatever I find fun, and then if that loses steam, I’ll move on to something else.” Kenney said.
