Aniplex USA has released a clip from Yasuomi Umetsu‘s new action title Virgin Punk: Clockwork Girl, which is screening in US theaters on November 11 and 13. The preview shows off a chaotic and stylish action scene with a mix of shooting and melee, detailed destruction, and a bulletproof luggage bag.
Virgin Punk: Clockwork Girl, which had its Japanese theatrical premiere on June 27, is set in the year 2099, where bounty hunters take down those who misuse the Medical Android Technology called Somadea. It recalls Umetsu’s adult action anime Kite (1998) and Mezzo-Forte (2000) with its girl-with-guns theme.
Here’s the premise from Aniplex USA:
Conditions for Receiving Bounty: Bring the brain of a wanted criminal possessing illegal Somadea to authorities. Whether the target is alive or dead…is irrelevant.
The year is 2099. Humanity has advanced, overcoming all injuries and illnesses with the development of the Medical Android Technology “Somadea.” However, along with the development of Somadea, crimes misusing said technology have rapidly increased.
Somadea grants physical abilities far superior to those of normal flesh and blood, and by illegally modifying it, Somadea can be misused for criminal purposes. To deal with these Somadea crimes, the government established the Bounty Hunter System. Civilians registered as bounty hunters are permitted to kill illegal Somadea users designated as wanted criminals by the police. In return, they are rewarded with large amounts of bounty money.
In this unforgiving world, Ubu Kamigori makes a living hunting down criminals as a bounty hunter. But one day, when she returns home from a job, she finds the man with whom she has a sordid history waiting there – Mr. Elegance. And so, her destiny begins to unravel.
A tale woven by mechanical girls and the smell of gunpowder smoke, this suspenseful action begins!
Virgin Punk: Clockwork Girl is the first installment in a series. It’s also the first Umetsu-directed project since 2014’s Wizard Barristers and the first Umetsu title produced at Shaft. The US release includes an English-dubbed version.
In the last few years, Umetsu appeared on Shaft productions like Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story (key animation), Pretty Boy Detective Club (opening storyboard artist and director et al.), Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story Final Season (key animation), and The Quintessential Quintuplets~ (key animation).
