Overview:
In Cap-Haïtien, dancers in royal attire brought Haiti’s historic elegance back to life during Le Roi Dance — a performance night celebrating dance teacher Godson “Le Français” Costumé’s 33rd birthday and the anniversary of his weekly dance night, Yayad Lakay. The event paid tribute to Haiti’s royal past under King Henri Christophe, blending local dance styles with touches of courtly grace.
CAP-HAÏTIEN — In a city once ruled by royals, echoes of the past came to life as dancers in crowns and velvet gowns took the floor at Lakay Bar Restaurant. The scene evoked memories of the 1800s, when Cap-Haïtien served as the seat of King Henry Christophe’s northern kingdom and elegant royal pride defined Haiti.
The night of performances was part of Le Roi Dance — or The King Dance — held in October as a double celebration. Dance teacher Godson “Le Français” Costumé marked both his 33rd birthday and the fourth anniversary of Yayad Lakay, the weekly Thursday night dance lesson he launched in 2021. The date also commemorated the death of King Henry Christophe on Oct. 8, and performers paid tribute by reviving the grace and grandeur of his royal era.
“We celebrated together — the dancers, the Cap-Haïtien community. I felt very proud,” Costumé said.
Dancers appeared in elegant costumes with crowns, tiaras and richly embroidered jackets.
Charlot Etienne swept Nacheley Casimir off her feet as the two danced under the dim purple lights of the restaurant’s outdoor floor. Casimir hung onto Etienne by his neck while she spun around his body. Amazed, the crowd applauded. The sound of clapping mixed with the slow instrumental.
