On this sombre day we remember
Men and boys that for our freedom died
For this once great nation they fought
Families for sons and husbands they cried
Off to war for king and country they marched
Sacrifice they took in their stride
From the slaughter of the somme
To the battles of world war two
Our leaders they sent them to war
Sacrificial lambs cannon fodder it’s true
It’s a crying shame people
That our once proud nation is broken
A quote from a 100 year old veteran Alec Penstone
“No, I’m sorry, but the sacrifice wasn’t worth the result of what it is now.”
Words of wisdom and truth duly spoken
Worldwide conflict continues to reign
Europe teeters on the the brink once again
We will bow our heads and reflect
The price they paid for our freedom today
For the summers they did not see
The wives and families left in dismay
A few live on with pain and regret
We as a nation must never forget
