‘Killer Whale’ Horror Movie from Lionsgate Rated “R” for Violence and Bloody/Grisly Images

The MPA ratings for the week have arrived today, and there’s one particular horror movie on the list that caught our attention. Coming soon from distributor Lionsgate? Killer Whale.

The upcoming aquatic horror movie Killer Whale has been rated “R” by the MPA this week for “some violent content, bloody/grisly images, language and brief drug use.”

This would seem to be an Australian production from director Jo-Anne Brechin (Designing Christmas With You), which comes courtesy of production company Jaggi Entertainment.

The Screen Australia website details the plot: “College students Maddie, Trish and Chad are inseparable. Maddie is an aspiring concert cellist, who finds inspiration in her work through her fascination with whales. Trish is a PhD student dreaming of a future as a scientist, who side hustles in social media influencing, never feeling financially secure.

“But tragedy strikes when Chad dies protecting Maddie during a robbery and Maddie’s hearing is damaged. One year later, Trish is prominent in her field and still shining on social media, while heartbroken Maddie has shelved her music dreams. Trish surprises Maddie, taking her on the vacation of a lifetime – to Thailand!

“Trish encourages Maddie to visit Ceto – her favourite Orca. But Maddie refuses to financially endorse the whale’s captivity, so alongside ex-pat Josh, they break in to see her. The next morning, they instead opt for an ocean adventure in a secluded lagoon. However, when Ceto, the ill-treated killer whale, is secretly released after killing yet another employee, they find themselves caught up in a terrifying situation. Stuck in an atoll – with the ocean’s apex predator hunting them.

“As past secrets are revealed and the situation becomes more precarious, survival seems impossible.”

Virginia Gardner, Melanie Jarnson, Mitchell Hope, Isaac Crawley, Scott George, Gulliver Page, Shinji Ikefuji, Ron Smyck, Nina Seijbel, and Luke Cunningham star.

This is the only upcoming project with the title Killer Whale that we’ve been able to dig up any info for, so we can only assume it’s the same Killer Whale that’s been picked up by Lionsgate.

It’s interesting to note, however, that a few other killer whale horror movies are coming soon. Novel adaptation Whalefall is the most notable, but Leslie Grace is also getting trapped inside a whale in the upcoming Propel, while Renny Harlin is directing orca movie Black Tides.
