PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A sudden leadership shakeup has struck one of Philadelphia’s most iconic cultural institutions.
The Philadelphia Art Museum announced Tuesday that Director and CEO Sasha Suda has been terminated, effective immediately. The decision followed an emergency meeting of the museum’s Board of Trustees.
“As of today, Director and CEO Sasha Suda is no longer with the Philadelphia Art Museum,” the museum said in a statement. “As this is an internal matter, we are limited in what we can say. The Board of Trustees is focused on fulfilling the museum’s mission as we enter our 150th year. We are not providing further comment at this time.”
Suda, who was in the third year of a five-year contract, had led a change campaign since 2022 that received mixed reviews. Most recently, she oversaw the museum’s rebranding, officially changing its name from the Philadelphia Museum of Art to the Philadelphia Art Museum and unveiling a new logo last month.
In June, the museum postponed the Philadelphia Show – a prestigious antique art fundraiser – until next summer.
The institution continues to operate with reduced staffing levels post-pandemic, and its endowment remains underfunded.
Louis Marchesano, the museum’s Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs and Conservation, will oversee day-to-day operations while the search for an interim CEO begins.
