Saw is one of those franchises that just won’t die. Since the so-called Final Chapter was released in 2010, three more Saw films have hit theaters—and now Blumhouse has acquired a 50% stake in the IP, with plans to produce even more entries. Since coming on board, Blumhouse has also brought franchise co-creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell back into the fold.

The duo is expected to return in a creative capacity after shifting to producing duties following the third installment. As it turns out, Wan and Whannell may not be the only familiar faces making a comeback. If the stars align, Cary Elwes might once again be ready to play another game.

Elwes first appeared in the original Saw as Dr. Lawrence Gordon, who was held captive in a grimy bathroom alongside fellow prisoner Adam (played by Whannell). Gordon ultimately saws off his own foot in a desperate attempt to escape. The character later resurfaces in Saw: The Final Chapter, this time in a far different role—no longer an innocent victim. Where a new film might take Dr. Gordon remains to be seen, but fans would no doubt welcome his return.

There’s currently no word on when the next chapter in the Saw franchise will enter production, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted as details emerge. We do know the new film will be set up with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, the horror division headed by original franchise director James Wan.

On the topic of his new crime thriller Dead Man’s Wire, Elwes spoke with The Direct about the possibility of reprising his iconic role. “I love James,” the actor said. “I mean, if they want to bring Dr. Gordon back, that’s a decision above my pay grade.”

When pressed further about whether he’d be open to returning, Elwes confirmed he’s “for sure” interested in coming back to the series.

While that’s not a definitive confirmation, it’s still encouraging to know that the actor remains open to revisiting the role that started it all.
