Greetings from Health for Haiti. Conditions continue to be very difficult in Grande Saline. Shortly after the flood waters began to recede – the community dealt with additional flooding caused by the heavy rains associated with Hurricane Melissa. Plans to get the school open have been put on hold as the local residents work to recover from the second round of flooding.
The mud and the destruction continue to feel overwhelming and communication with our partners in Haiti has been very difficult. We are also trying to deal with a pump malfunction at the water system and some uncertainty about how the garden fared during the recent flooding. We are waiting to see if the rice harvest, which was so very close to being ready (shown before the hurricane), is still going to be possible.
There is a lot of work to do and we are focusing on putting a plan in place to set priorities and move forward from the crisis. With all of the bad news coming from Haiti we are hopeful that there are better days ahead, and we are excited to announce that we will once again partner with the SUNY Broome Engineering Club and our local Haitian community to co-host the third annual Taste of Haiti dinner at SUNY Broome.
The Taste of Haiti event will be on Saturday, November 22 from 6 to 8:30pm at SUNY Broome in the dining hall located in the Student Center building. The event will feature delicious Haitian cuisine, live music, raffles, and guest speakers. This is a time to come together with hope to celebrate the vibrant Haitian culture and to focus on how we can support our friends and neighbors in Haiti who have endured so much hardship. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children.
We need your help! Please consider helping out by spreading the word, attending the dinner, and/or donating a basket or item for our raffle fundraiser. Every contribution helps and goes to support our work in Grande Saline. We are hoping to help the community to make the repairs necessary to maintain access to safe drinking water and to open the school so that the nearly three hundred local children can continue receiving a high quality education.
Please consider joining our efforts if you can! For more information, to reserve tickets, or to donate a basket or item for the raffle, please contact Jen Musa at musajm@sunybroome.edu or Robert Lofthouse at lofthouserw@sunybroome.edu. THANK YOU!
