Campy horror isn’t for everyone. I get it. Some people prefer their genre cinema sans schlock, and I don’t judge. I do, however, eagerly consume as much trashy horror as I can possibly get my hands on. The VelociPastor? Sign me right up. Meth Gator? Why not?

I’m not going into such fare with expectations of greatness or even really looking for competent filmmaking. I am merely content to escape into a farcical setup where I can turn off my brain while laughing at a series of outlandish exchanges that culminate in a preposterous conclusion.

One such film is presently streaming on Hulu. A zany campus horror picture called Slotherhouse. As you can likely tell just from the title, this is not one to be taken too seriously. Those who go into it looking for meaning are sure to come away wanting. But those who take it for exactly what it is are all but guaranteed to have fun with it.

Slotherhouse plays out like this:

Emily Young (Lisa Ambalavanar) is a senior who wants to be elected as her sorority’s president. She adopts a cute sloth, thinking it can become the new mascot and help her win, until a string of fatalities implicates the sloth as the main suspect.

I’ve cobbled together a sampling of playful social media reactions from fans who appreciate the film for exactly what it is. Not surprisingly, no one is praising the picture as high art, but many appreciate the film’s inherent camp value.

Slotherhouse is directed by Matthew Goodhue, who helmed it from a script by Bradley Fowler. Producer Cady Lanigan (who plays Morgan in the film) takes a “story by” credit.

During the feature’s promotional period, Goodhue and Lanigan spoke with Forbes and openly acknowledged that they had no designs on making a good movie. They admitted that the idea was intentionally bad, but they nonetheless drew inspiration from some tried-and-true classics. “We wanted Slotherhouse to be like Mean Girls meets Happy Death Day with a touch of Gremlins,” Lanigan told the outlet.

While it might not rise to the level of its various inspirations, many agree that the flick is great fun for schlock enthusiasts. If it sounds like it might be up your alley, head over to Hulu and give Slotherhouse a shot.
