Plants vs. Zombies has nothing on Unclear Games, who have just announced their upcoming plant-centric survival horror game The Florist. Coming to PC via Steam and consoles next year, The Florist sees players face off against omnipresent floral overgrowth that’s as colourful as it is deadly.
The Florist centres around Jessica Park, who arrives in the lakeside town of Joycliffe to make a last-minute delivery. Unfortunately for Jessica, the town has been overrun by voracious plant life, killing and transforming the inhabitants into a horrific melding of plant life and and animal. Naturally, it’s up to Jessica to expose the mystery behind such inhuman events, while also staying alive and fighting through what remains of Joycliffe.
Players must use their intuition and observation skills to determine the best path forward, using an array of hidden items and cryptic clues to make progress. Key information is recorded via the in-game journal, which includes story discoveries and data of floral specimens. Players will discover many weapon types throughout the game to do battle against evolving enemies and bosses. The plants aren’t going to just sit there, mind you. As day turns into night, the floral growth presents new deadly foes with abilities that change over the course of the game.
Unlike the typical gloomy environments one would experience in a survival horror game, the danger here is found in lush greenery, with color and light being used as primary gameplay and artistic devices to create tension and unsettling ambience.
Other notable design features for The Florist include the use of fixed camera angles, multiple difficulty and accessibility options, and in a departure from the genre, unlimited inventory to pick up everything along the journey and autosave checkpoints. There are also plenty of bonus features and unlockable content.
