Mike Flanagan Has “Soft spot” for This Must-Watch Thriller on Tubi

Bill Paxton left an impressive legacy behind when he passed away. The late actor picked up multiple Golden Globe nominations over the course of his storied screen career. Not to mention, he is the only thespian to die at the hands of the Alien, the Predator, and the Terminator.

Paxton’s genre credentials are plenty noteworthy, indeed. In addition to the trifecta mentioned above, he also features in the celebrated vampire picture Near Dark and the offbeat horror comedy Club Dread. Furthermore, the actor made his feature film directorial debut with a genre flick. An atmospheric meditation on religion and the evils that men do.

I’m talking about Frailty. The film underperformed at the box office, but eventually developed a cult following via home video and streaming. The picture’s fan base even includes Mike Flanagan.

While the Hush director has some minor reservations about the film, he still sees considerable merit in Frailty. That much is abundantly clear from his Letterboxd review. You can see an excerpt from his write-up directly below.

“I’ve always liked this movie. Bill Paxton’s directorial debut is one of those hidden gems of the early 2000s horror scene. It’s a little bumpy and rough around the edges, it isn’t going to change the world, but the story is interesting, the performances are great, and it highlights Paxton’s strengths both in front and behind the camera. I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for it.”

What happens in Frailty?

A mysterious man arrives at the offices of an FBI agent and recounts his childhood: how his religious fanatic father received visions telling him to destroy people who were in fact “demons.”

I am perhaps an even bigger fan of the film than Flanagan. In fact, I previously covered it for my Dread Central column, The Overlooked Motel, and summed the film up as “… a complex and layered affair that leaves it up to the audience to decide who the heroes and villains of the piece really are.”

If you’re game to take in the film to make your own assessments about the true nature of the complex characters within, you can scope the flick on Tubi now!

That’s all that we’ve got for you at present. Stay tuned in the near future for more recommendations from your favorite creators in the genre space. If you’ve experienced Frailty, be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
