Ryan Coogler is on fire right now. Following two wildly successful Black Panther films, he tried his hand at genre fare and knocked it out of the park with Sinners. Next up, he’s working on a reboot of the cultural phenomenon The X-Files.
Variety recently caught up with Coogler at a special screening of Sinners at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. The filmmaker was kind enough to give the outlet an update on the forthcoming reboot, revealing that the property is close to his heart because his mother is a longtime fan of the show. He admitted that she’s read some of what he has so far, and her reaction has been enthusiastic.
“My mom means the world to me — she’s actually here tonight — so this is a big one for me,” Coogler shared. “I want to do right by her and the fans. My mom has read some of the stuff I wrote for it. She’s fired up.”
Although it’s safe to assume that Coogler’s mother might be slightly biased, it’s still exciting to learn that a die-hard fan of the original series is connecting with his vision for the reboot. The X-Files is sacrosanct for many, so there are bound to be a lot of opinions and high expectations for the upcoming reimagining.
So far, we know that the project is being housed at Disney+. Rumors are circulating that Danielle Deadwyler will play one of the lead roles. When Variety asked Coogler for comment on her involvement, he was cagey, telling the outlet, “I can neither confirm or deny.”
He provided the same response regarding whether or not some of the series’ original cast members will appear in the reboot. Though a confirmation would be nice, I’m glad to know that the return of series mainstays isn’t off the table.
There’s speculation that the program will feature a male lead opposite Deadwyler, but that also remains unconfirmed as of yet.
The setup for the original series is this:
FBI special agents investigate unexplained, mind-bending cases known as “X-Files.” Though the government is convinced that the outlandish reports are false, conspiracy theorist Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and realist Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) stop at nothing to prove that “the truth is out there.”
There’s no word at this point on when the reboot will bow, but Coogler has confirmed that the series is a priority for him. So, hopefully we’ll have more to report soon.
