Nitty Nora, the head explorer in her apron starched white.
Woe betide any bugs that would bravely put up a fight!
Any living bugs in your hair, Nora would seek and catch.
For Nora’s brutal comb, no bug alive was ever a match!
Nora’s steel comb, the equivalent of a cruel hunter’s snare.
It trapped any living creature that was hiding in your hair!
So, in the school corridor, we all nervously formed a line.
It was that dreaded time of year…it was ‘Nitty Nora’ time!
Nora would rake that weapon of a comb across your head.
Ensuring every bug she came across was killed, stone dead!
You got the ‘letter of shame’, if any nits were found on you.
And normally before long, the whole class caught them too!
(Nitty Nora was also known as ‘the bug or nit explorer’ in other parts of the Country, but I’m sure I remember her being called ‘the head explorer’ in Liverpool!)
