10 years ago, It Follows became the little indie film that could. It started in limited release and eventually expanded to more than 1,600 screens, pulling in over $20 million at the box office. Not long after the film established itself as a runaway hit, writer/director David Robert Mitchell expressed interest in a potential sequel to the property. For years, nothing materialized, and then, in 2023, Neon announced that they are onboard to produce a second series installment titled They Follow.

Genre stalwart Maika Monroe is attached to reprise her role as Jay Height for the sequel. She briefly chatted about the project with Discussing Film at the premiere of Hulu’s The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. Monroe, Dread Central’s inaugral digital cover star, revealed that she’s read Mitchell’s script, and admits that it’s a noticeable departure from the first.

Well, I mean, I was sent this script, and I just, I thought it was incredible,” Monroe began. “Also, it’s very different from the original. I feel like the original, it’s, like, a little more heightened and dramatic, and this, I think, is really quite grounded and just sort of follows this story of these two women that are, just, like, mentally dealing with a lot, and I thought it was really an interesting take on it.”

It’s encouraging to hear that the sequel is charting a different course. There’s nothing worse than a follow-up that fails to differentiate itself from its predecessor. I’m quite curious to see where Mitchell takes the property this time.

What is the setup for It Follows?

After carefree teenager Jay (Maika Monroe) sleeps with her new boyfriend, Hugh (Jake Weary), for the first time, she learns that she is the latest recipient of a fatal curse that is passed from victim to victim via sexual intercourse. Death, Jay learns, will creep inexorably toward her as either a friend or a stranger. Jay’s friends don’t believe her seemingly paranoid ravings until they, too, begin to see the phantom assassins and band together to help her flee or defend herself.

The project has yet to commence production. Mitchell and Monroe each have several pictures in various stages of development. So, it’s likely to come down to timing.
