Keira Knightley Stuns in #1 Netflix Thriller: “A 10/10”

Keira Knightley, the woman that you are. Beyond my own conspiratorial tendencies speculating she’s been around for at least 300 years, there’s at least no denying she’s been a certified asset for any project she touches. While it’s only ever marginally genre, when she does dip into the horror pool, the results are nothing less than stellar. Camille Griffin’s Silent Night was an apocalyptic tour de force, and Knightley was the best thing about an already exceptional cast.

That’s usually the case, especially with Netflix’s latest star-studded thriller. Knightley leads the charge alongside Guy Pearce, David Ajala, Kaya Scodelario, and others in Simon Stone’s The Woman in Cabin 10, adapted from Ruth Ware’s novel of the same name. It’s the author’s first adaptation, though rumors have been swirling for years about In a Dark, Dark Wood reaching the big screen. Hopefully, The Woman in Cabin 10 is an appetizer for more. It should be, especially since the Hitchcockian thriller is the most-watched movie on Netflix. Learn more below:

Per Netflix: A journalist (Keira Knightley) uncovers a sinister mystery on board a sumptuous superyacht in this psychological thriller based on the bestselling novel.

Stone’s adaptation isn’t going to radically change your world, but not everything needs to. Instead, it’s akin to streaming Hitchcock-lite, and I mean that complimentarily. It’s a breezy beach read of a movie. Sufficiently tense, theatrically performed, and chock full of twists so silly, you’ve no choice but to take them seriously. With Knightley in the lead, I dare you not to. Through the cramped corridors and close calls with danger, Stone squeezes a lot of mileage out of his limited setting and kitchen-sink mystery.

Despite poor critical reviews, The Woman in Cabin 10 feels more like a movie than most Netflix releases. It’s stylish, nicely filmed, and yeah, it’s got genuine talent behind it. That no doubt accounts for why I was reasonably engaged on a Sunday night – who was staying in that cabin?! Luckily, audiences have been kinder than critics, and you can check out some choice social media reactions below:

Keira Knightley is fantastic in The Woman in Cabin 10.

Unfortunately, not much else is.

Book didn’t translate well to 90 min film. Perhaps a limited series would’ve been better to build out the supporting characters.

But props to Keira for her effort pic.twitter.com/yzzlnr3S3u

The Lady in Cabin 10 was nice, the “thrill” sucked a bit once revealed and everything after she jumped off the yacht was a lazy lie, but it was good
