The hearing comes in response to a recent federal emergency order, requiring SEPTA to conduct enhanced inspections of its Silverliner IV railcars following a series of fires.

The National Transportation Safety Board warned that the outdated design and maintenance practices posed an “immediate and unacceptable safety risk.”

SEPTA has pulled more than 150 cars from service to comply with the order, leading to widespread delays, cancellations, and overcrowding across the Regional Rail system. Riders have reported long wait times, shortened trains, and packed cabins.
