I encounter many people in both a personal and professional capacity with an aversion to subtitles. I often find myself in situations where I’m enthusiastically endorsing a particular picture to someone who seems interested in the concept, only to lose buy-in when I eventually mention that the film is in a foreign language.
I get that some people are averse to “reading a movie,” but to pass over a picture on that basis is a great way to limit yourself and miss out on meaningful art. I’ve previously extolled the praises of a number of highly effective subtitled pictures for my Dread Central column, including House (1977), High Lane, Timecrimes, and Dream Home, to name just a few.
As luck would have it, another foreign-language film that I championed via The Overlooked Motel is now streaming on Prime Video. The House at the End of Time is a simultaneously poignant and chilling time loop horror that features an overarching theme about the importance of family.

Dulce encounters apparitions in her house and unleashes a terrible prophecy. Thirty years later, now an old woman, she returns to unravel the mystery that has terrorized her for years.
Filmmaker Alejandro Hidalgo pulls triple duty on this heartfelt offering. He takes the sole writing and directing credits in addition to working as a producer. His passion and dedication shine through in the finished product. The film proved both a commercial and critical success. The House at the End of Time garnered largely positive reviews and grossed $4.4 million in its native Venezuela, making it the highest-grossing horror film in the country’s history.
With statistics like that working in the film’s favor, I hope you will set aside any potential misgivings about subtitles and check this one out.
