Featured during The Horror Game Awards Halloween Showcase last week, CRITICAL REFLEX and developer Bastinus Rex’s CARIMARA: Beneath the Forlorn Limbs is out today on Steam with a limited-time 10% discount until October 20. Despite being a short one hour trip, CARIMARA’s retro-tinted romp “has more than a few twists, turns and mysteries lurking in the shadows.”
Inspired by medieval Normandy folk legend and classic cinema alike, CARIMARA: Beneath the Forlorn Limbs casts you as the eponymous magical being, with your goal being simple: summon a ghost. But it’s not as easy as shouting incantations, particularly since you’re mute.
What you do have, however, is the gift of conjuring questions. Using the game’s point-and-click interface, you have a selection of cards adorned with mysterious glyphs to communicate with the world. While there are those who smile, some sneer, and some simply stare. But all who watch know you are there. For those that do speak, listen to what they have to say, and pay attention to the details. But be careful – ask the wrong questions and you may wind up a mystery yourself.
Complementing the unorthodox gameplay is the world and art design of CARIMARA itself, sporting highly detailed low-poly graphics, hand-crafted visuals and stop-motion animations. There are no foes to battle here – just riddles wrapped in candlelight.
