David F. Sandberg Teases His ‘Amityville Horror’ Movie, Potential ‘Lights Out’ Sequel

While appearing at Midnight Fest in Boston over the weekend, director David F. Sandberg commented on his upcoming Amityville Horror movie.

“I’m looking forward to doing a supernatural, classic horror again,” Sandberg told the audience. “Until Dawn was quite different and was more gore and craziness. Really looking forward to doing more of that suspenseful, supernatural horror.”

Announced last month, Sandberg will helm a reimagining of the horror classic from writers Ian Goldberg & Richard Naing (The Conjuring: Last Rites, The Autopsy of Jane Doe) for Amazon MGM Studios.

Sandberg also revealed that Lights Out 2 could still see the light of day.

“There’s a chance there could be a sequel. We’ll see,” Sandberg teased.

“We did have a version of a sequel which it wouldn’t be if we do it now. Well, some of it might be. But that one took place shortly after [the original], but now Martin’s not a kid anymore, so it would have to take place, like, 10 years later.”

He adds, “I don’t know how much I should say, ’cause it could still happen!”

Released in 2016, Lights Out marked Sandberg’s feature directorial debut, based on his viral short film of the same name.

In the script by Eric Heisserer (Arrival, Bird Box), a young woman must unlock the terror behind her little brother’s experiences that once tested her sanity, bringing her face to face with a supernatural spirit attached to their mother.

Beyond those pending projects, Sandberg revealed he’d like to make a science fiction movie.

“I would like to do sci-fi, especially more grounded sci-fi, not necessarily space battles and things like that. That’s still a goal. I would love to do something like Event Horizon, where it’s like space horror.”

He continues, “Not specific IPs. RoboCop would be cool.”

Stay tuned for more on Sandberg’s upcoming work as it develops.
