Phillies magic number: Philadelphia on brink of clinching NL East title | Playoff seeding, clinching scenarios

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The Philadelphia Phillies are closing in on their second straight National League East title, and they could clinch as early as this weekend.

With 15 games remaining, the Phillies begin a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals on Friday night at Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia enters the matchup with a 4-game win streak, leading the division by 11 games over the Mets.

What is the magic number?

The Phillies’ magic number to clinch the NL East is 5, meaning any combination of Phillies wins and Mets losses totaling five will secure the division crown.

While a clinch this weekend is unlikely, it’s mathematically possible if the Phillies sweep the Royals and the Mets lose all three games against the Rangers.

Playoff seeding scenarios

Philadelphia currently holds the No. 2 seed in the National League, which would grant a first-round bye and home-field advantage through the NL Division Series. The Milwaukee Brewers remain in the top spot, but the Phillies are within striking distance and could still claim the No. 1 seed with a strong finish.

Clinching the No. 1 seed earns a first-round bye and home-field advantage through the National League Championship Series.
