Gremlins actress Polly Holliday passed away yesterday at her Manhattan home. She was 88.
Holliday is perhaps best known for playing waitress Flo on “Alice” and its spin-off, “Flo.” In addition to coining the catchphrase “Kiss my grits,” the role earned her two Golden Globe Awards for Best Supporting Actress and several Emmy nominations.
But genre fans will recognize Holliday as the mean-spirited Mrs. Deagle in Gremlins, who is ejected out of a second-story window after the titular creatures tamper with her stair-lift chair. She took home the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress for the part.
Her other notable works include All the President’s Men, Mrs. Doubtfire, The Parent Trap, “Home Improvement,” and an episode of “Amazing Stories.”
Holliday was also a respected stage actress, nominated for a Tony Award for her portrayal of Big Mama in a 1990 Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
