“THE TOXIC AVENGER” REMAKE PULLS DISAPPOINTING NUMBERS ON OPENING WEEKEND

After sitting on the shelf for over two years, Macon Blair’s remake of The Toxic Avenger hit screens on August 29th.

The latest release from Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting, the latter have pushed the boat out with countless promotional gimmicks. Both parties were clearly hoping that The Toxic Avenger would see similar results to the likes of Terrifier 2 and 3.

Given the Labor Day weekend release with very few competing new releases, did The Toxic Avenger slay the box-office?

Well… no.

Despite all the promotion, and a cast including names like Elijah Wood, Kevin Bacon, Peter Dinklege, and Jacob Tremblay, The Toxic Avenger opened in a disappointing 12th place.

Despite opening on a sizeable 2,000 screens, The Toxic Avenger managed only $754,578 in its first day. The film dropped 33% during its second day, and a further 6.2% during its third, for a final weekend tally of $1,734,359.

Reports suggest that the film’s budget could be as high as $50 million, meaning the paltry domestic weekend haul makes the film unlikely to turn a profit.

Internationally, The Toxic Avenger opened in very few markets, as distribution outside the U.S. proved difficult to acquire. However, in the few markets where the film did play, it netted an equally disappointing $46,693.

Given the wide cult appeal of Troma’s original Toxic Avenger property, Cineverse likely expected an opening weekend on-par with Terrifier 3. However, The Toxic Avenger fell far short of Terrifier’s $19 million opening.

So, it seems all the hype Bloody Disgusting have tried to build around The Toxic Avenger and its unrated nature fell flat…

Despite the positive critical reaction, the commercial failure of The Toxic Avenger raises serious doubts about the performance of upcoming Cineverse releases. Will Silent Night, Deadly Night or Wolf Creek Legacy see similarly disappointing results? We’ll have to wait and see.
