Guillermo del Toro is an auteur creator with an enviable filmography filled with a variety of impressive efforts. He dazzled movie lovers with his endless imagination and uncompromising creative brilliance in the heartbreaking Pan’s Labyrinth and delivered a feast for the senses with The Shape of Water. Each of these celebrated efforts even took home multiple Academy Awards.
We’re not here today to talk about the director’s more universally celebrated fare, however. We’re instead setting out to champion an engaging spectacle of a film that remains somewhat underrated amongst the immensely talented creator’s oeuvre. A kaiju feature that sometimes gets lost in the shuffle, yet still very much deserves recognition as an epic endeavor.
We’re talking about Pacific Rim, a grandiose film with a lot of heart that juxtaposes giant monster action alongside giant robot action. Could you really ask for more?
What is the setup for Pacific Rim?
Long ago, legions of monstrous creatures called Kaiju arose from the sea, bringing with them all-consuming war. To fight the Kaiju, mankind developed giant robots called Jaegers, designed to be piloted by two humans locked together in a neural bridge. However, even the Jaegers are not enough to defeat the Kaiju, and humanity is on the verge of defeat. Mankind’s last hope now lies with a couple of unlikely heroes.
Although the flick remains somewhat underrated in comparison to some of del Toro’s other pictures, it still has its share of supporters. You can see what we mean below.
We’ve collected a sampling of social media shoutouts from a few of the film’s biggest fans:
Del Toro’s fingerprints are all over this project. Aside from directing the film, he also takes a writing credit alongside Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans). Together, the pair have dreamt up a magical and immersive scenario that is sure to be a crowd pleaser for the right audience. If you think that you may be among the film’s target audience, we recommend that you navigate over to Netflix to see what you think.
If you’re still undecided, allow us to sweeten the deal a bit more. In addition to plenty of epic action, the flick also features an incredible cast of familiar faces. The core lineup includes Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Ron Perlman.
There you have it, dear reader. Pacific Rim is an underrated del Toro picture that you can presently stream on Netflix. Catch it while you can! There’s no telling how long it will be available to stream.
