You’ll be beaten up if you try to delete genuine voters, Congress leader warns BLOs

Senior Tripura Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman on Sunday said Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will be publicly “beaten up” if they attempt to delete names of any genuine voters or include any fake names during the proposed SIR of electoral rolls in the state.

Addressing a training programme for the party’s booth-level agents for the proposed exercise in Indranagar in Agartala, Roy Barman said Congress wants a transparent and error-free electoral roll, and would not allow what “had happened in Maharashtra, Bihar and Haryana” in Tripura.

“The Congress has no objection if names of dead voters or foreign citizens are deleted from the electoral rolls, but any unethical practice to include fake or ghost voters, duplicate, or triplicate names will not be allowed. It is the duty of the Election Commission to prepare error-free electoral rolls,” he said.

Roy Barman said there will be dire consequences if the BLOs try to adopt any unethical practice to include fake names, in the electoral rolls.

“Tripura is a small state where everybody knows everybody. If any BLO tries to delete the names of genuine voters or include any fake names under pressure from the ruling party, he or she will be beaten up publicly,” he said.

Later, Roy Barman told reporters the ruling BJP allegedly wanted to stop the training programme and prevented decorators from putting up loudspeakers, providing chairs and erecting a stage.

“Despite these obstacles, we have been able to kick-start the training for the BLAs and booth presidents under open sky,” he said.

Targeting Chief Minister Manik Saha, he said, “I hope the ‘leader of good governance’ will take appropriate steps about this so that we get a fair chance to organise political programmes”.
