Sanjay Mishra was an NSD topper, talented enough to be anything he wanted, but Mumbai did not hand him anything. Rejection after rejection piled up, and when he lost his father, the weight became too much to carry. So he left it all behind, the city, the auditions, the dream, and headed to Rishikesh, where he chopped vegetables and washed dishes for a living, convinced his time in cinema had passed. Then a single call from Rohit Shetty changed everything.

He came back, and the performances were different. The same face that made us laugh in Office Office turned us silent in Masaan, Ankhon Dekhi, Kadvi Hawa, Kaamyaab and Vadh, films that revealed the depth behind the comic actor we thought we knew. Thirty five years and nearly two hundred films later, the man who once scrubbed plates at a dhaba now holds a National Film Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, for his journalist in Bhakshak.
