Prajwal Revanna moves Supreme Court seeking rape case transfer to another judge

The expelled leader of Janata Dal (Secular), Prajwal Revanna, who is convicted in a rape case, on Tuesday moved Supreme Court, seeking a transfer of his case to another judge on the grounds of an alleged bias of a sessions court judge.

Earlier, the grandson of the Janata Dal(Secular) supremo, HD Deve Gowda, moved to the Trial Court and the Karnataka High Court seeking permission to transfer the case to a different judge. However, his plea was rejected by both courts.

The latest plea, which Revanna’s legal team submitted before the Supreme Court, challenged the orders of both the Trial and Karnataka High Courts. The matter in the top court will be heard by a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant.

Trouble brewed for the former MP after last year’s Lok Sabha elections, when more than 2,000 video clips surfaced on social media platforms, showcasing Revanna sexually assaulting multiple women.

The first complaint was raised by an old domestic help from the family, who accused Revanna of raping her since 2021. She also accused the ex-Hassan MP of threatening him with releasing the videos on social media.

As the allegations sparked a nationwide uproar, the Siddaramaiah government formed a special investigative team (SIT) to conduct a probe into the matter.

However, a twist of the tale occurred in the matter when the complainant went missing suddenly. The SIT recused her from a farmhouse, and it came to light that she was kidnapped at the behest of Revanna’s parents.

Revanna was finally arrested by the SIT on May 31, 2024. After almost a year of trial, he was convicted by the Special Court in the case of rape.
