The Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) has urged the management of BEML to reconsider its proposal seeking permission to fell 137 trees for the construction of an Occupational Health Centre (OHC) at its Mysuru complex, while expressing support for the project in the interest of employees.
MGP clarified that it was not lodging a formal objection to the project and did not intend to create hurdles in the construction of the Occupational Health Centre. Instead, it appealed to BEML management to revisit the proposal and examine alternatives that could reduce the number of trees proposed to be cut.
In a letter addressed to the Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF), MGP’s founding working president, Bhamy V. Shenoy, said the MGP was initially concerned on learning about the proposal to cut trees. However, after understanding the purpose of the project and BEML’s efforts in maintaining greenery across its 450-acre campus, the focus shifted towards exploring ways to minimise tree loss.
The proposed OHC is intended to serve more than 1,600 employees and is reportedly required under regulations. While acknowledging the need for the facility, MGP sought to know whether felling 137 trees was unavoidable.
Dr. Shenoy noted that BEML had made significant contributions to greening the campus by planting hundreds of trees and maintaining nearly 50 per cent green cover. However, MGP suggested that the project design could be reviewed once again to identify alternatives for reducing the number of trees proposed to be cut.
Kaduhabba
The letter also mentioned discussions held by some MGP members with DCF Paramesha on May 21 regarding the celebration of ‘Kaduhabba’, an initiative aimed at promoting awareness and love for trees, particularly among the younger generation, with plans to formally launch it on World Environment Day on June 5.
MGP also proposed organising a programme at BEML to appreciate the company’s contribution to maintaining green cover and encourage employees to plant trees in their neighbourhoods. It said the initiative could also serve as an opportunity to learn from BEML’s efforts in maintaining greenery.
