Gujarat: Denied phone by father, 20-year-old jump into borewell in Bhuj, dies

A 20-year-old labourer from Jharkhand died after he jumped into a 140-foot-deep borewell near Kukma, close to Bhuj, on Friday evening.

The victim, Rustam Sheikh, had reportedly argued with his father earlier in the day after being denied an expensive mobile phone he wanted to buy on instalments. Hours later, his family learnt that he had fallen into the borewell.

The incident occurred around 6.38 pm near Ashapura Hill where Rustam had been working as a labourer. The borewell, barely one foot wide, trapped him deep inside.

As soon as authorities were alerted, administrative officials and fire teams reached the spot and launched a rescue operation. Through the night, the team supplied continuous oxygen to Rustam via a pipeline lowered into the borewell and monitored his condition using a camera.

The operation ran for nearly nine hours and involved Army personnel, local borewell experts, and 15 members of the fire brigade. Despite sustained efforts, rescuers struggled to pull him out. Eventually, they used a local method: a metal hook tied to a rope and lowered through a pulley system. The hook latched onto Rustam’s clothing, allowing the team to extract him.

Rescuers brought him out around 3 am and immediately rushed him to Bhuj’s GK General Hospital in a 108 ambulance. However, doctors on duty declared him dead.

Kutch Police said an NDRF team also assisted in the operation. Initial findings confirmed that Rustam had been upset after his father refused to buy him the phone, following which he jumped into the borewell.
