Backed by the sea, this couple’s customised nautically-inspired wedding mandap looked right at home at their beach wedding ceremony

Shreya and Dhruv Dharnidharka’s wedding at Taj Bekal Resort & Spa was a stunning reflection of their personalities and their shared love for nature and the sea. Designed and executed by WeddingSutra Favorite – To The Aisle, every celebration was envisioned as an experience that flowed seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.

“We met on a blind date,” shares Shreya. “We were introduced by a family friend who is also Dhruv’s cousin. We hadn’t seen each other’s pictures or even spoken before our first date, and yet, it just clicked instantly.” Their connection was effortless, and when it came time to plan their wedding, both were certain it had to be a destination celebration rooted in tranquillity and beauty. “The Taj Bekal was the first and only venue we visited, and we were sold from the moment we entered the lobby,” she smiles. “We both have a strong connection to water, and since the hotel is bordered by both the backwaters and the ocean, it felt like it was designed for us.”

The festivities began with a ‘Colours of the Earth’ brunch, a warm and organic celebration that reflected the serene charm of Kerala. Guests were asked to wear semi-formal Indian wear in earthy and pastel tones, and the decor mirrored this palette beautifully. Subtle nods to Kerala’s culture, like local blooms, cane accents, and organic textures, were infused into the design, creating an ambience that was grounded and graceful.

The Cocktail was a dramatic departure — a glamorous Old School New York Mob Bar evening set within the Taj Bekal’s Reception Lobby. “Dhruv was certain he wanted one event where everyone could dress in tuxedos and gowns,” recalls Shreya. The design team transformed the space into a dark, moody speakeasy with rich woods, velvet drapes, and flickering candlelight. A vinyl record-inspired bar and DJ backdrop tied together Shreya’s love for music and Dhruv’s love for cocktails, creating an unforgettable night of rhythm and revelry. “It was one of our favourite evenings with the cool December weather creating the perfect ambience,” she shares. “We even managed to use the lobby, a venue rarely used for weddings, by getting special permissions. It looked spectacular.”

The wedding ceremony on the beach was the emotional crescendo of their celebrations. Inspired by their love for water and their ivory-hued ensembles, the decor was woven around a palette of corals and marine-inspired elements. The centrepiece, a breathtaking boat-shaped mandap with hand-embroidered sails, became a visual metaphor for their journey together. As the sun descended behind the mandap, casting golden hues across the ocean, Shreya and Dhruv exchanged vows in a moment of quiet magic. “The deliberations for the mandap took the longest, but when we saw it complete, we knew it was perfect,” Shreya reminisces. “It was everything we had imagined and more.”

Reflecting on the experience, Prerika Puri from To The Aisle shares, “Shreya and Dhruv had immense clarity about how they wanted their wedding to feel — elegant yet personal, refined yet rooted in nature. The Taj Bekal offered that balance effortlessly, and our design journey was about amplifying that innate beauty while weaving in their story.”
